Photosensitivity
Mar 6, 2006
Some forms of photosensitivity can also increase the risk of skin cancer. Sunlight contains both ordinary visible light and shorter invisible light rays called ultraviolet radiation.
- There is enough UVR to cause a rash on photosensitive skin between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. even on a cloudy day. Bright surfaces, like snow, concrete and sand, reflect UVR and can nearly double the amount that gets to the skin.
- Do not apply perfumes, colognes or aftershave lotions before venturing into the sun as they may cause semi-permanent brown spots on your skin.
- Be wary of medications and the sun as some can make you especially susceptible to sunburn eg. tetracycline, diuretics and some antibiotics.
- Oral contraceptives have been known to cause some women to develop a very unattractive pattern of brown blotches around the eyes from exposure to the sun.
- Certain foods can promote photosensitizing such as citrus fruits and vanilla.
- Restrict outdoor activities to early morning or early evening.
